Scientific Name: Osmorhiza longistylis
Common Names: Aniseroot, Longstyle sweetroot, Sweet Anise
Origin: Native
Notes: There are two species of Osmorhiza (sweetroot) in Iowa. They are; O. longistylis (Aniseroot) and O. claytonii (hairy sweet-cicely) . The most frequently suggested distinctions between the two species are:
1)
O. longistylis roots have a strong anise/licorice odor,
O. clalytonii does not.
2).
O. longistylis has a longer style (2 to 4 mm) than does
O. claytonii which have styles not exceeding 1.5 mm.
3). Stem pubescence seems an unreliable way to distinguish between the two, due to its variability, see reference #2 below.
