Notes: A "Primary Noxious Weed" also because of its rariety, this perennial plant is considered a "special concern plant species" in Iowa; habitat, open dry well-drained soils; this plant is very similar to C. floodmanii except the cauline leaves are undulate and not as deeply divided.

Flowers: June; purplish-pink; involucre 2.5-3 cm; outer phyllaries end in prickles; cypselae 6-7 mm. stems gray or white tomentose.

Leaves: blades oblong 10-40 cm, margins strongly undulate, often entire margined, tipped with yellowish spines.
