Scientific Name: Stylisma pickeringii [Stylisma is a reference to it's two, rarely three, styles; pickeringii in honor of Charles Pickering] (Synonym: Breweria pickeringii) [Breweria in honor of Samuel Brewer]
Common Name: Pickering's dawnflower. The name dawnflower derives from its habit of opening early in the day and then closing as the air grows warmer.
Origin: Native— rare
Notes: Stylisma pickeringii is adapted to open, dry, and sandy habitats. It is very rare but has been reported near the Mississippi river in S.E. Iowa (ref. 16). It is listed in Iowa as an Endangered Species. Seed germination may require scarification (ref. 8).

Flowers: June; white corolla, sepals are blunt and villous, style unequally 2-cleft; inflorescence peduncle terminates by a pair of leaf-like bracts subtending one to three flowers, the single or central flower is sessile, any lateral flowers have short pedicels 1-4 mm long; capsule pubescent.
Leaves: narrowly linear 1-6 mm wide by 30-60 mm long, held vertically on the stem and each gradually tapering to base;
Stems: trailing vines, freely branching and softly pubescent.
