Notes: Blooming in April-May, these perenial monocots are usually less than 25cm high and are found in mesic and upland soils often in grassy regions.

Flowers: stems emerge from an underground corm and produce one to six yellow flowers, each with six tepals and six stamen. The inferior overy is three locular and supports, on its top, a style with a three ridged stigmatic surface and the filaments for six stamen. after opening the anthers have an arrow shape. The buds and fruit are hairy (hirsute). The fruit is a capsule normally bearing a few globose black seeds.
Leaves: basal, linear, and grass-like but slightly to densely hairy
