Scientific Name: Phytolacca americana

Common Name: pokeweed

Notes: All parts of the plant contain toxins (ref. #3) some of which can be absorbed when plant juices contact the eyes or abraded skin. The berry juices have been used as a stain and some medical claims are made for the plant. Pokeweed interest toxicologists because it provides powerful immune stimulants as well as antiviral and antifungal properties. Birds feed on pokeweed fruits and seeds but humans should probably avoid eating any part of the plant.
