Anemone ssp.

Anemone acutiloba

Anemone acutiloba - An "ephemeral" in early Spring woodlands

Eilers and Roosa, the BONAP site, and the USDA plants site use the binomial Hepatica nobilis (syn. H. acutiloba) for the plant shown in the painting to the right. Two varieties are suggested: acuta with sharp leaf tips and obtusa with rounded leaf tips. The FNA site prefers to place this plant with the Anemones and uses the binomial Anemone acutiloba (see discussion).

The Anemone species that are most common in S.E. Iowa, are:

Anemone acutiloba - Sharp-lobed hepatica [native, woodland]

Anemone canadensis - Canada anemone [native, moist prairie]

Anemone caroliniana - Carolina anemone [native, dry open spaces]

Anemone cylindrica - Thimbleweed [native, prairie]

Anemone quinquefolia - Wood anemone [native, moist open woods]

Anemone virginiana - Tall anemone [native, dry open woods]
