Notes: Three varieties are recognized for C. occidentalis. The species is rare in Iowa. Only variety occidentalis has been reported and only in a few of Iowa's most eastern counties. It is a perennial plant with viny stems, usually found on limestone cliffs and ledges or rocky or gravelly soils.

Flowers: May; solitary, perfect (both sexes present), flowers are born on pedicels arising from leaf axils; petaloid sepals are reddish-violet; fruits are born in dense heads of achenes.
Leaves: opposite, trifoliate, leaflets slightly lobed or unlobed, margins entire to crenate.
