Notes: The most common native wild roses in S.E. Iowa are thought to be Rosa carolina and Rosa arkansana (var. sulfata). Identification is often difficult due to the variations caused by phenotypic plasticity and hybrids between the two species.

Flowers: light pink to red; mostly singular; pedicels and hypanthia (and usually fruit) with stipitate (stalked) glands; sepals spreading or reflexed after anthesis, usually deciduous in fruit.
Leaves: on floral shoots with 5-7 leaflets.
Stems: prickles acicular, appearing primarily at nodes; smaller, few or none on internodes; bases scarcely dilated.
